Annually in the spring a large number of tourists come to Transcarpathia in natural landmark Kireshi to see one of the 7 Wonders in the Transcarpathia. They come to look at the miracle of nature. A valley which is covered with daffodils. This type of daffodils is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. The very "Narcissus Valley" is part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve which is a UNESCO biosphere reserves. The name of valley as well as this wonder of nature was preserved until today by means of hard work of Transcarpathian botanist Vasil Komendar. He helped to stop illegal actions of the Soviet Union authorities and achieved reserve status for Daffodils' Valley. And since 1979 this valley is considered to be the part of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve.
Flora of array (expanse) consists of mixed grass and grass-mixed grass communities among which are red chaff (Festuca rubra), tussock beam (Deschampsia caespitosa), meadowy foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis), soft bromus (Bromus mollis). Areas with high humidification is covered with diferent types of sedges (Carex acutiformis, C. acuta, C. vulpina) and spreading Sitnik (Juncus effusus).
In general, there are 498 different species of plants, including 15 species of flowers that are registered in the Red Book, 16 species of orchids. Among the rare species of plants there are: Trees verbolystyy (Achillea salicifolia), palchatokorinnyk Fuchs (Dactylorhiza fuchsii), palchatokorinnyk May (Dactylorhiza majalis), Erythronium dens-canis (Erythrronium dens-canis), gentian normal (Gentiana pneumonanthe), gymnadenia odoratissima (Gymnadenia odoratissima), Cock Siberian (Iris sibirica), Orchis militaris (Orchis militaris), ridkokvitkovyy orchis (Orchis laxiflora), white cinquefoil (Potentilla alba) and others.
According to first legend, in crystal clear waters of the river Khustets Greek god Narcissus saw his representation. He became in love with himself and died because of anguish on the banks of this river.
According to another legend, Knyaz, his wife and their beautiful daughter Rusya lived in the Khust castle. When he had her 18th Birthday celebration a lot of people came to congratulate her and so potter Ivanko did. He came and gave her a present. It was an amazing vase with white narcissus flowers which seemed to be alive. In that moment they became in love with each other. But when her father found out that his daughter was in love with potter he became angry and threw the vase out of the window. The vase was broken and ground was covered with daffodils.
Popular folk legend said that the appearance of unique Valley of daffodils is connected with the history Nankivsk miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. According to this legend in August 1690 in the village Nankovo people saw the image of the Virgin Mary. The local community appealed to the owner of the field with a proposal to build a temple on the site or chapel, according to the Christian tradition. Landowner refused community and placed the icon on the cart. Inadvertently he broke the icon and tears poured down from her eyes. He and his family were punished and the icon was taken away. Tears which remained on the ground became daffodils.
They also say that when the enemies took Khust Castle, city residents brought their pillows, filled with daffodils, claiming that it is a sign of humility and respect for the winners. The soldiers did not know that daffodils - poisonous flowers, and thus fell asleep on the "daffodil’s" pillow, a person can not wake up.
Today, many tourists are able to visit the "Daffodils’ Valley" from the first to second week of May, while they are in bloom. Ukrainian Tourist Agencies offer visitors unite with nature and enjoy a visit to this natural miracle. But remember that when you come in the "Daffodils’ Valley ", you first of all should follow the rules of environmental protection. Don’t tear flowers, don’t trample them down and don’t try to take photos on the middle of the field. If you tear a flower, you can jeopardize this incredible natural wonder. Moreover you have committed a crime (by the way, which is punishable by law and many fine), because there is a grear deal of those who want to disrupt the flower... Save one of the seven natural wonders of Ukraine for our children and grandchildren.
